5 Encouraging Tips for Photographers Heading into the New Year

Welp I’m in denial that Christmas is so soon. And yes, I’m still shopping. 🙈 Every year I feel as though I’m ahead and then somehow I fall behind and bam Christmas is in 10 days!  Anyone else this way???

Surely I’m not alone.

Today, I just wanted to give you some encouragement moving forward into 2025.

FIRST and FOREMOST. Don’t give up. It will be hard. It will be a daily struggle at times. It will be frustrating. But most businesses don’t make it, not because they couldn’t become successful… but because they gave up before they could even hit that point! If I had a dollar for every time I wanted to give up over the past 11 years… I’d be a freaking billionaire! Keep going. Keep pushing. You will make it!

If you don’t already have your WHY determined and locked in the back of your mind. That needs to happen before 2025 hits. Why do you want to start a photography business? Why do you want to be your own boss? What are your reasons? These will bring you motivation and strength in the future.

Rome wasn’t built in a day.

It’s so easy to see people on social media killing it and booking things left and right. But keep in mind, this didn’t happen for them over night! They didn’t decide on Monday to start a photography business then by Friday have a booked calendar. Stay patient, stay focused on YOU and YOUR business, and stay true to who you are, what you want, and how you’ll get there.

Creating a marketing plan will help you here. It’s not the fun, sexy part of a photography business. But we are in fact running a business… so there has to be business aspects, such as marketing, that come into play. If you aren’t ready to hire someone to do this for you, then it falls on you, the owner.

This is not a shameless plus because I’m a photography coach. This is just a fact. Even if you don’t want to learn from me, find someone out there doing what you love, that you admire and are inspired by and learn from them. Grab their freebies, read their blogs, study their work and learn from it. When you are ready to fully invest in yourself, join their workshops, courses, masterminds. I PROMISE it will teach you so much and you will be so thankful you did. Entrepreneurship doesn’t have to be lonely.

If you are tired of spinning the wheel trying to figure things out on your own and you feel like you are getting no where. It may be time to look into a mentor, someone to help you connect the dots. Find someone you could become friends with. It makes life much sweeter when you work with friends.

I can not stress this one enough!!!! Burnout WILL happen if you are not careful and intentional. It is so freaking easy to just book all the things during a busy season. You’ll feel accomplished and successful because you’re making a shit ton of money and have all the things on the calendar. But by the end of it you’ll start to feel tired, grouchy, miserable, and just plain over it. Do this over and over again, year after year, and you’ll be ready to put down your camera for good.

Each of these pieces of advice I am giving to you are from personal experience. This burnout one, man… I know it all to well. It’s a career killer. A thief of joy and dreams. It will make you unsure and rethink things that shouldn’t be rethought. Take time to be intentional about what you are taking on and take time for mental and physical self care, as cliche as that sounds.

While these are all hard at times to do, I think this one is a little extra hard. We get stuck in this hustle culture. In the I need to be better, be more, have more, book more, make more money mindset… and if we aren’t there we feel as though we are failing. More often than not if we can just slow down and take a moment to see and recognize all that we have accomplished already, we will realized we are doing the dang thing! We are living out our dreams and goals. Take a moment for gratitude. It will change your life.

I do this daily in my mind, sometimes on paper, but mostly when I’m driving and in silence. Even for just five minutes. I shut out everything and just think about where I am today versus a decade ago. I soak in the feeling of gratitude for my clients, my home, my car, my children, my job, my talent, my life in general. Putting things into perspective and romanticizing your life is beautiful. I encourage you to start doing this today.

I KNOW these are not always easy. Mindset plays a HUGE roll in daily life as well as being an entrepreneur. This is something I am passionate about and love talking you through.
